Frequently Asked Questions

Whether you are applying to an airline, a flight school or for some kind of pilot sponsorship scheme, answering application questions often forms part of the pilot, or future pilot selection process. Our pilot application questions services can help!

For some free tips on completing a pilot CV, check out this article from Flight Deck Wingman – we are experts at helping all pilots achieve success with their applications. Check out our pilot CV services!

Definitely! We would strongly recommend creating a bespoke pilot CV for each and every airline or flight school application. This helps you stand out against the other pilots applying for the role and helps the pilot recruiters more easily recognise why your experience would make you the ideal pilot candidate!

If it’s your own pilot CV design and template, then this is absolutely fine! However, we would strongly recommend not using any services that offer to write your pilot CV for you. Airline recruiters can recognise this and it doesn’t look good! Give yourself the best chance on landing your dream flight deck job and work hard to create a really stand-out pilot CV!

You should carefully consider the skills and qualities you have that would make you an asset in the role of a pilot and to any airline that you are applying to. You must “evidence” these skills, known as ‘competencies’ to the airline or flight school that you are applying to. The Flight Deck Wingman team are expert in training you in techniques to do this!

Creating a bespoke CV for the airline you are applying to is an easy way to evidence why you are the right cultural fit for them. Want to know if your pilot CV is hitting the mark? Why not check out our pilot CV services starting with our GROUND LEVEL Pilot CV service!

A pilot cover letter should be considered as a kind of “motivational speech.” You should carefully research your chosen airline or flight school and then think about how you can use this research in your pilot cover letter to evidence your motivation.

Definitely! We would strongly recommend creating a bespoke pilot Cover Letter for each and every airline or flight school application. This helps you stand out against the other pilots applying for the role and helps the pilot recruiters more easily recognise why your experience would make you the ideal pilot candidate! Generic covering letters are easily spotted!

No longer than one page. Make sure that everything you include on your pilot covering letter is relevant and concise – just like a brief in an aircraft. Around three 100 word paragraphs is about right.

Try to focus on areas that are important to that airline or flight school. For example, if they are very focussed on teamwork, then you should include some evidence of your experience and competence in the teamwork competency. Aside from the content of the pilot covering letter itself, it is vitally important to make sure that you check your covering letter for any grammatical or spelling mistakes. If your first language isn’t English, then we would recommend using a specialised service such as that provided by Flight Deck Wingman.

Essay questions are frequently used at all levels of an initial screening process for airlines, flight schools and pilot sponsorship or scholarship schemes. These questions are often poorly answered by candidates who don’t understand the importance of putting together a well thought answer. Recruiters and assessors will be looking for you to evidence knowledge of the position you are applying for and to evidence how your competencies would make you a worthy recipient of further consideration. If you don’t put the effort into answering these questions properly, then don’t be surprised if you are not successful!

Most airlines, flight schools or sponsorship/scholarship schemes will make it clear how long your answer should be e.g. “In no more than 300 words…”. If this is the case, then make sure that you count the words carefully using a word count on your computer. If they don’t specify a limit, then we would recommend keeping answers to no more than 300 words – relevant and concise, just like a brief in an aircraft.

Almost – certainly! You might think that your experience would speak for itself, but a well motivated pilot candidate will take the time to answer a pilot essay question thoroughly and comprehensively. This could mean that a pilot with less experience is progressed over a candidate with more experience – take your time!
