Why should I use Flight School Wingman mentoring?
A good mentor should be someone with real, significant experience – that’s what makes their guidance worth having. It’s worth remembering that not everyone offering “mentorship” has the depth of experience, or the training, to support you properly, so it’s always worth checking who you’re actually talking to and what they bring.
With Flight School Wingman, your Wingman is an extremely experienced pilot, trainer and mentor, with decades of military and commercial aviation experience – and Mental Health First Aid (MHFA England) training to support you through the tougher moments too.

Is this pilot mentoring and career guidance confidential?
Yes – confidentiality is at the heart of this service. Whatever you’re facing during your training, you can talk it through openly, knowing your Wingman will listen without judgement and guide you in the way that’s right for you. The only exception, as you’d expect, is if we ever believed you or someone else was at risk of harm, in which case we have a duty of care to help you find the right professional support.
What kind of topics do pilots normally want to discuss?
Every future pilot’s situation is different, and no topic is too big or too small. We’ve supported aspiring pilots through the ups and downs of flight training – choosing the right flight school, struggling with a particular phase, a failed progress test or skills test, confidence knocks, worries about funding or timing, and simply needing impartial advice from someone who’s been there. You’ll have the chance to outline your own circumstances when you book, and everything is treated with complete discretion.
Can you help me choose a flight school?
We can help you make an informed choice, though the final decision is always yours. Flight training is a major investment, and we’ll talk you through what to watch out for and the right questions to ask – so you choose the school that genuinely suits you, not the one with the slickest sales pitch.
I'm not sure if I want to become an airline pilot or a military pilot. Can you help me decide?
Yes. Our founder, Andrew, has experience of both worlds – as a former military fast-jet pilot and a commercial airline pilot – so he can give you an honest, first-hand picture of what each path really involves. We’ll talk through the key differences, the lifestyle, and the long-term outcomes of both, so you have the information you need to decide which career pathway is right for you.
Am I too old to become a pilot?
Almost certainly not. There’s no upper age limit to begin training as a commercial pilot, and many people come to flying later in life, bringing valuable experience from previous careers. The practical considerations are more important than age itself: commercial pilots currently face a mandatory retirement age of 65, so it’s worth weighing up how long you’d have to enjoy a return on your training investment, and you’ll need to hold a Class 1 Medical. Beyond that, it comes down to your motivation, commitment and ability. If it’s a serious ambition, it’s well worth exploring properly – and our career guidance can help you weigh up the decision honestly before you commit.
