Who’s it for?

Anyone thinking of a career as a pilot, (airline or military) and family supporting someone (financially) into a career as a pilot. Getting honest, ethical and unbiased support can be a challenge in the market of future pilots, particularly if you’re thinking of becoming a commercial pilot where training can cost more than £100,000. Training organisations may not always give you the full picture, (or will arguably give you their version of the picture). You must do your research!

For aspiring pilots

We will offer you unbiased guidance on any aspects of your future career – commercial or military. We are all current airline pilots and most of our team are also former military pilots. Whatever your question, we assure you of honest and impartial support.

For family and sponsors

If you are thinking of supporting a family member through flying training, then it can be hugely beneficial to speak to an expert in the field and one that isn’t trying to sell you a flying training course! We assure you that we have both yours and your family members best interests at heart.

What areas can we discuss?

Check out the FAQ’s at the bottom of this page for more guidance on the topics that you might like to discuss…

Lots! Our team of Wingmen are all highly experienced professional aviators with backgrounds in both the airline and military! We’ve flown everything from military fast jets and helicopters to the B747 and A320 and more…

The Wingman team remember exactly what it was like to be at the beginning of our professional pilot journeys and are on hand to help you with honest, unbiased and ethical support – we will never push you to train with a particular provider, nor will we ever recommend completing training or courses that you don’t need to. We are very happy to speak to aspiring military pilots or their parents/sponsors about the various career paths and options out there, so get your questions ready – we are standing by to assist!

“As an aspiring military pilot and current glider pilot, I’ve found my career support calls with Flight School Wingman extremely helpful. It was brilliant to have an individual who well understands the current training and recruitment process to explain possible career paths. I also found it helpful hearing my Wingman’s first hand experiences and in doing so, gaining a better understanding of what being a military pilot is actually like.”

Talking to a pilot is a great (and free!) way to get some great guidance on a future career as a pilot. Pilots love to talk about their careers and will almost always be willing to help impart the knowledge that they have to aspiring pilots. So how can you find one?!

All Aspiring Pilots

Visit your local flying club

Go and visit your local flying club (not flying school) on a nice day. Nice days are likely to mean that more pilots are out flying and some of those will probably be current commercial or even military pilots. Introduce yourself to people and get talking – often asking if you can help out in some way also works well!

Visit a gliding club

Gliding is a fantastic way to get into an aviation career and is a team driven sport. Go and take a trial lesson and tell them what your aspirations are and ask if there are any people that you could talk to that might be able to help. Find your local club here.

Aspiring Military Pilots

The Air Cadets and University Air Squadron’s

If you are still at school, then joining the Air Cadets is a great way to get some flying and to connect with current or former military pilots. If you are at, or are applying to University, then you may have the opportunity to join a University Air Squadron, where you can learn to fly and will have multiple opportunities to meet with military pilots.

Visit your local Armed Forces Careers Office

Some opportunities exist for aspiring military pilots to visit military bases and get some work experience. Your local AFCO will be able to advise.
